There are a total of 64 generations of patriarch over the last 5,000 years. The patriarchs were firstly the Chinese Emperors, then Chinese Scholars, Indian Monks, Chinese Monks and lastly lay people. This line of 64 patriarchs from one patriarch to another is called The Golden Thread or The Lineage of Tao.

The Golden Thread of 64 Patriarchs is explained in this "64 hexagrams" known as "Pak Kua" in Chinese. It is already full and there will be no more rebirth of any Heavenly Being in this cycle of Heaven and Earth.
